My Story

I Know What It Feels Like To Think Feeling Bad Is "Normal."

Long before I became "The Poop Doctor," I was the girl normalizing symptoms I now help people understand every single day.

As a teenager, I struggled with obesity, acne, eczema, psoriasis, mood swings, and constipation — and thought all of it was just… normal. Because that's what most of us do. We normalize bloating. We normalize exhaustion. We normalize surviving in bodies that are screaming for support.

Working in the holistic health space introduced me to detoxification, digestive health, and the body's incredible ability to heal when given proper support. Things started changing. My skin cleared. The weight came off. The brain fog lifted. For the first time in my life… I actually felt human.

As a teenager, I struggled with

  • Obesity + skin issues (acne, eczema, psoriasis)
  • Mood swings + brain fog
  • Chronic constipation
  • Feeling disconnected from my body
  • Chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia-like symptoms, chronic pain

The Mission

How I Became "The Poop Doctor"

It wasn't a name I chose — it was given to me naturally over the years. The more people came to me with constipation, bloating, and all the things nobody else wanted to talk about, the more the name just stuck. And honestly? I embraced it. Because somebody needs to make this conversation less weird.

"I'm not a medical doctor. I'm a board-certified traditional naturopath and colon hydrotherapist who is passionate about digestive health education — and helping people support their body's natural ability to eliminate and regulate itself."

— Joanna Stanescu, The Poop Doctor

The question everyone asks

"Wait… Are You Actually A Doctor?"

Fair question. No — not a medical doctor. But here's the thing most people don't know:

The word "doctor" comes from the Latin word
"docere"
which means
"to teach."

Most clients tell me they learned more about their digestion, bowel habits, nervous system, and body in one visit than in years of appointments elsewhere. I really know my shit. 💩

Open-System Colon Hydrotherapy San Jose

Why Clients Travel Across The Bay Area

The open system is completely different from what most nervous first-timers imagine. The nozzle is tiny — about the size of a pencil — and only inserts about 2 inches.

  • Gentler + more natural
  • More private + client-controlled
  • Far less invasive
  • Beginner-friendly

"That was WAY easier than I expected."

LEARN YOUR BODY

Digestive Health Made Digestible.

One of the biggest reasons people connect with my work is because I simplify things. I believe people deserve to understand their body in ways that actually make sense.

I don’t want people dependent on me forever. I want people to understand their digestion, recognize body patterns, trust their intuition, and stop feeling afraid of their symptoms.

Breaking The Poo Taboo

Let’s Normalize Talking About Poop.

Some people think it’s weird that I talk about poop for a living. I think it’s weird that society doesn’t.

Digestive issues affect energy, hormones, inflammation, mood, skin, nervous system regulation, confidence, and quality of life.

Did You Poop Today?

Yes, I really ask people that.

Because healthy pooping should be normal. I want people to feel safe, comfortable, educated, understood, empowered, and maybe laugh a little too.

Because healing doesn’t always have to feel so serious.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions.

  • Are you a medical doctor?

No. I'm not a medical doctor and never claim to be one. I'm a board-certified traditional naturopath, certified colon hydrotherapist, and certified peristeam hydrotherapist with nearly 20 years of experience in digestive wellness. "The Poop Doctor" is simply a nickname clients naturally gave me over the years because… well… I talk about poop A LOT 💩

  • What qualifications do you actually have?

I am a Board-Certified Traditional Naturopath, Certified Colon Hydrotherapist, Certified Peristeam Hydrotherapist, and hold a Bachelor of Science in Health Science (Community Health education) from San José State University. I also complete continuing education regularly across digestive health, gut health, detoxification, nervous system health, bio-optimization, and functional wellness.

  • How long have you been doing this?

Nearly 20 years! What began as a high school job in the holistic health field grew into my life's work and greatest passion.

Over the years, I've worked with countless clients navigating digestive issues, chronic symptoms, and health concerns they've struggled to find answers for.

One of the most rewarding things I hear is, "You've helped me more in one appointment than the specialists I've seen over the years."

Helping people feel heard, connect the dots, and better understand their bodies is what makes this work so meaningful to me.

  • Is colon hydrotherapy safe?

We use a Class 1 FDA-registered colon hydrotherapy device — which is considered very low risk. (For context: tongue depressors are also Class 1 devices.) The open system is specifically designed to be gentle, client-controlled, less invasive, and beginner-friendly. Most clients say it's far easier than they imagined.

  • What if I'm embarrassed?

Trust me — nothing shocks me anymore 😂 Everybody poops. Everybody farts. Everybody gets bloated. Everybody has digestive struggles. Breaking the "poo taboo" is literally what I do. Most clients are shocked by how quickly the awkwardness fades once they realize how warm, private, and normal the whole experience actually is.

  • What makes you different from other colon hydrotherapists?

    A few things:

    • I offer the only open-system setup in the South Bay
    • I focus heavily on education — not just the session itself
    • I create a warm, approachable, non-clinical experience
    • I deeply understand the nervous system–digestion connection
    • I've been doing this for nearly 20 years and genuinely love it
  • Do you diagnose or treat disease?

No. The services and education provided at The Poop Doctor are intended to support wellness, detoxification pathways, body awareness, relaxation, and healthy elimination naturally. Nothing here is intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease.
