A Naturopathic Philosophy

Before Assuming Dysfunction, Let's Make Sure Proper Function Can Happen.

One of my favorite concepts I learned in naturopathic school was this:

"Before assuming dysfunction, let's make sure proper function can happen."

It's a philosophy that has stuck with me throughout my career, and it's one of the first things I walk every client through.

Before we start assuming something is wrong with your body, I want to know: Are we even giving it what it needs to function properly?

The Poop Doctor mascot looking through a magnifying glass

🌞 Are you...

😴 Getting enough sleep? 🌳 Outside in natural sunlight? 🌬️ Breathing properly? 🚶 Moving your body? 💧 Drinking enough water? 🥗 Nourishing yourself with real food?
OR

☕ Or are you running on...

🥱 Five hours of sleep ☕☕☕ Three cups of coffee 🥡 Takeout 📱 Endless screen time 😵‍💫 A nervous system that hasn't relaxed since 2017

And we're surprised we don't feel good?!

Here's the thing: your body is incredibly intelligent, but it isn't magic. You can't consistently deprive it of the basics and expect it to function optimally.

Finding Your True Baseline

When clients come to me with digestive complaints, fatigue, bloating, constipation, or a laundry list of mysterious symptoms, one of my first priorities is establishing their true baseline.

Illustration of a stressed, tired person at a laptop
🚫 Not this

Not how they feel when they're underslept, overworked, dehydrated, overstimulated, and surviving on caffeine.

Illustration of a calm, relaxed person
✅ This

I want to know how their body functions when its fundamental needs are being met.

Because until we establish that baseline, it can be difficult to distinguish between symptoms driven by everyday habits and symptoms that deserve further investigation.

Sometimes the body isn't malfunctioning. It's responding exactly how we'd expect to the conditions we're putting it through.

Of course, healthy habits don't rule out medical conditions. But getting the foundations right gives us a much clearer picture of what's really going on.

Introducing

Introducing The Poop Doctor's Meal Hygiene™

You probably practice personal hygiene every day. You brush your teeth, wash your hands, and hopefully shower regularly.

🍽️ Meal hygiene?

But what about your meal hygiene?

We spend so much time talking about what to eat that we often overlook how we eat.

Digestion isn't just about the food on your plate. It's a coordinated process involving your brain, nervous system, mouth, stomach, intestines, hormones, and digestive secretions.

And that process begins before your first bite.

Here are my foundational rules for better Meal Hygiene™.

Meal Hygiene™ Rules 1 & 2

Get Into Rest and Digest Mode

1

Stop Eating in Fight-or-Flight Mode

🙅

Your body has two major branches of the autonomic nervous system: sympathetic ( fight or flight ) and parasympathetic ( rest and digest ).

Both are important, but digestion generally benefits from a relaxed state.

If you're eating while rushing between meetings, arguing with your partner, answering stressful emails, or watching a terrifying crime documentary, you're probably not creating the most comfortable environment for digestion.

Ever notice how your stomach tightens during a suspenseful movie? Your brain can respond emotionally and physically to what you're watching, even when you know it isn't happening to you.

🔪📺 My rule: Save the murder mysteries for after dinner.

Try making mealtime a moment of calm rather than another source of stimulation.

2

Take 10 Seconds to Switch Into Digestive Mode

⏱️

Before taking your first bite, pause.

📵 Put your phone down.
😌 Relax your shoulders.
😬 Unclench your jaw.
🌬️ Take a few slow, comfortable breaths.

That's it.

This simple ritual helps interrupt the momentum of a hectic day and gives your nervous system an opportunity to settle.

Think of it as telling your body:

"Okay, we're safe. We're slowing down. It's time to eat."

You don't need a 30-minute meditation session before lunch. Sometimes ten intentional seconds are a great place to start.

Meal Hygiene™ Rules 3 & 4

Chew More. Chug Less.

3

Chew Your Damn Food!

🦷
Your stomach doesn't have teeth. Use the ones you've got!

Digestion begins in your mouth, where chewing mechanically breaks food into smaller pieces and mixes it with saliva.

Saliva contains digestive enzymes, including salivary amylase, which begins breaking down starches before food even reaches your stomach.

Chewing also stimulates sensory and nervous-system responses that help prepare the stomach and other digestive organs for incoming food.

When you inhale your meal in four bites, you're skipping an important part of the digestive process.

😋 My rule: Chew everything.

Liquids, smoothies, soups. It feels weird, but trust me on the chewing.

Just slow down, chew thoroughly, and give your digestive system a little help.

4

Be Mindful of How Much You're Drinking With Meals

🥤

One of my traditional meal-hygiene recommendations is to avoid chugging large amounts of liquid immediately before, during, or after meals.

⏳ Try a 20-minute buffer before and after eating.

The idea is to allow your stomach to focus comfortably on digesting the meal rather than diluting it.

Meal Hygiene™ Rule 5

Sit Down. Slow Down. Be Present.

5

Sit Down. Slow Down. Be Present.

🧘

Eating while driving, standing over the kitchen counter, scrolling through social media, or working at your computer might be convenient, but it can make it harder to pay attention to your food and your body's signals.

Whenever possible, sit down and give your meal your attention.

✨ Every meal can be a meditation if you bring your awareness to it.

Notice the smell, flavor, and texture of your food. Really immerse yourself in the experience.

Slowing down can help you remember a connection with your food you didn't know was missing.

🙌 Pro tip: Get your hands involved! I personally love eating with my hands whenever it's practical. There's something wonderfully grounding about physically connecting with your food. Think of Pavlov's dogs 🐶: sensory cues can prepare the digestive system for a meal before the first bite. The sight, smell, touch, anticipation, and taste of food can all contribute to what's called the cephalic phase of digestion. Using your hands instead of utensils can be a beautiful way to slow down, engage your senses, and reconnect with the experience of eating.

Tap each one you can say yes to 👇

You don't need to master every habit overnight.

It's not about perfection. It's about direction.

Start with one or two and build from there.

Make choices that support your digestive health more often than not.

The Bottom Line

It's Not Always What You're Eating. Sometimes It's How You're Eating.

You can buy the highest-quality organic food, take expensive digestive supplements, and follow the trendiest gut-health diet on the planet.

But if you're scarfing down your meals while stressed, distracted, exhausted, and running on empty, you may still struggle with digesting and absorbing your meals properly.

Before adding another supplement, eliminating another food group, or assuming your digestive system is broken, ask yourself: Am I giving my body the opportunity to function properly?
